Volunteer

Use your Skills, Life Experiences and Spare Time to Support Others

Volunteers are at the heart of our centres. If you want to get involved, meet new people, learn new skills or rediscover old ones then please get in touch with your local centre.

Women At Risk Volunteer Mentors

We now offer a package of services which work with women at all points in the criminal justice system which all require mentors or admin support.

The main areas of work will be:

  1. To provide one to one support and guidance to women at risk of offending or committing further offences.
  2. Working in a person-centred way with women at risk of offending or further offending – providing them with information about what is on offer at Lancashire Women’s Centres and in the wider community.
  3. Devise action plans and goal setting with women whereby they can tackle the issues that may have led to them offending and start to rebuild their lives in a pro-social way.

Essential Criteria:

  1. A commitment to helping women to reduce their offending.
  2. An interest in helping women in a person-centred way.
  3. A willingness to learn and be supported and guided by the Women at Risk team.
  4. A willingness to undertake training.
  5. Ability to commit to at least 6 months of mentoring work one day a week and to mentoring training.
  6. Allow a DBS check to be carried out.
  7. To be reliable, professional and open to learn.
  8. To have a basic understanding of administrational duties.
  9. A willingness and ability to manage feelings, boundaries and reactions to distressing situations.
  10. An ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  11. To be contactable by phone and e-mail.


Desirable Criteria

  1. Knowledge and direct experience of professional work practices, preferably in a health & social care or criminal justice setting.
  2. Knowledge of criminology, women’s offending, rehabilitation and related issues.
  3. Knowledge of or experience in working with women in relation to women with complex needs.

Counselling Volunteers

We deliver a range of therapeutic services across East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen and welcome counselling volunteers.

PLEASE NOTE: Our next volunteer therapist recruitment day is at our Accrington Centre at 10am on Thursday 9th November for trainee counsellors who are studying at least level 4 diploma. 

The day will consist of learning more about LWC, basic training, working whilst on placement, opportunities, group work and interviews.

Training Volunteers

The MindFit programme is a successful progressive route of personal development courses, each stage lasts for approximately 5 weeks. It is a responsive educational programme of wellbeing and mental health recovery – a series of  needs led workshops and courses. As a training team volunteer – you can choose to work during term – time only. We would ask that you can commit to 3 hours per week , regularly for a minimum period of 4-6 months. Opportunities include – Training support & Peer Group Facilitators

Fundraising Volunteers

Fundraising Volunteer - there is a clue in the title - "FUN!". You can help coordinate fun activities and events, enabling us to be out in the community, raising awareness of our charity and raising much needed funds.

Benefits: 

There are lots of benefits for volunteering in our Fundraising team, help make a difference to a special local charity. You will be part of an enthusiastic fast moving team! It's one of our most varied and fun roles - no two days will ever be the same! 

Skills Needed:

  • A professional and friendly manner
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Previous fundraising experience would be a bonus , although not necessary
  • Enjoy having fun and ability to think of fun ideas to raise money
  • A willingness to be involved
  • As the role is flexible, you can give as much or little time as you want

Building Better Opportunities - Age Of Opportunity

Building Better Opportunities - Age of Opportunity is aimed at those over 50 who are facing significant barriers to employment, and which might include caring responsibilities, low skills or mental ill health.

We need a strong team of able Volunteers to support people who want to develop their IT skills, either on a 1-2-1 basis or in small groups.

Skills Needed:

• Excellent IT skills including smartphone knowledge
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Administration skills
• Willingness to travel
• A commitment of 4 hours per week for minimum of 6 months.

Employment Volunteers

Our Workfit Programme provides individually tailored services for any woman looking to gain employment, go into education, volunteering or job searching. Our team provide one to one and group support to help individuals develop their own personal action plan and to support them to achieving their goals. 

Workfit Mentors

Work alongside our Workfit Coaches to help support programme participants on a one to one basis. The role involves:

· Interim one to one  meetings with project participants to provide continuity of support and catch up on progress.

·Administrative work – updating client files and electronic records

·Research work – finding the right course, job or volunteer opportunity in the right area for individual participants.

· Engagement activity – hosting Workfit information and sign up activity within local Job Centres under the direction and supervision of the Work Coaches.

· Networking and promotional activity – attending community events – telling people about our services.

Work Club and ICT Volunteers

We aim to run Volunteer led weekly work clubs and basic IT sessions at each of our centres throughout Lancashire, to support women with Job Search, CV Building and basic IT skills. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with IT skills to get involved and support others on their journey to upskill and find the right job for them.

Tutor Support

Our Training Co-ordinator runs and delivers Workfit training courses at all of our centres. Tutor Support volunteers help within the training room, supporting learners and the tutor and  facilitating activities within the group.

General Mentor Volunteers

There are times in all our lives when we could really benefit from the help of another person. We might just want someone to discuss options with, someone to talk through ideas for the future or support with forms and appointments or advice on the internal services we can offer. 


Mentoring offers you the opportunity to develop a relationship that is based on trust, confidentiality and mutual involvement to set goals and decide achievements. 

Your sessions will involve setting personal goals, guidance and action planning to help a successful outcome.
